Bursitis

Sports Health Conditons: Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of the small fluid sac that cushions and lubricates an area where muscle, bone, tendon, ligament or skin rub against each other.

Bursae are located throughout the body, particularly where joints are under pressure or at risk of rubbing together. Bursitis is common in the heel, hip, knee, elbow, shoulder and more.

Bursitis can be caused by repetitive or sustained pressure on a bursa through sports that involve rapid movement or frequent twisting. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, redness and warmth. Musculoskeletal ultrasound can be used to diagnose this condition.
